Today we continue in our journey through the book of Exodus, and we come to the Ten Commandments. Unfortunately, like much of the scriptures, this is a passage that we need to reframe for our thinking. Today, the commandments are seen as cold laws – rules and restrictions that politicians fight to keep in or out of schools and courthouses. In reality, the commandments are a picture of life lived under the blessing of God. They begin with a picture of God’s grace:
“I am the Lord, your God, who brought you out of Egypt.” (Exodus 20:2)
God rescued Israel, and continued to bless them not by simply restricting them with rules, but by pointing the way to what life should be. The commandments are a gift of grace. Let’s begin our worship remembering that God’s word, his law, and his voice, are sacred gifts that we didn’t ask for or deserve. Instead he initiated a conversation with us, rescued us, and gathered us into this new family called the church.
