Repenting of our Fear for our Finances

by Mike Cosper on March 31, 2009

God’s design is that we would live a life of generosity and trust in him. Our enemy wants us to believe otherwise, fearing for our finances and clinging to material things. Hear the word of the Lord:

Ecclesiastes 5:10-11

In days of economic turmoil, we need to hear the words of scripture that call us to place our hopes beyond stock markets, unemployment checks, and paydays.
Let’s confess together our need for the Lord to change our perspective

Mike, I really appreciate this. I’ve been thinking for a few months now that some of our worrying about money (in addition to violating Jesus’ command not to worry about tomorrow) shows a lack of global perspective; the majority of people in the world live on two dollars a day or less. I hesitate to voice this because I don’t want to diminish the strain that economic challenges–especially job loss–put on people, families, and workplaces. We’re not, as one economic analyst put it last year, just “a nation of whiners.” But here’s how I put it in my prayer here at OS:

Remind us, Lord, that no matter how bad the economic news sounds, we remain an abundantly, often indulgently wealthy nation in the midst of a world full of desperate poverty. And yet, Lord, recent economic events put a very real strain on us, our lives at work, our relationships at home, as the ache of uncertainty gnaws at our hearts. Comfort us, strengthen us, and, as you did with Job, release us from our illusions of self-reliance, and remind us that our only future lies in your promises.
