At Church of the Servant, one of things the catechism class does to prepare for their profession of faith is to craft a profession based on the Apostle’s Creed. Claire Lambert’s appears below. Unlike other resources in The Open Sourcebook, this is an example rather than a ready-to-use resource. It struck me as I heard Claire profess her faith the value of reciting the Apostle’s Creed each week in worship. She has clearly internalized it enough to recast it in her own words. It also made me realize the powerful ways worship, Christian education and church polity join in faith formation. Read Claire’s profession of faith and consider ways your church could adapt this idea.
I believe that God created everything, from the tiniest animal to the largest mountain.
I believe He provides for me and for all He has made; He is my Father.
I believe that God is more complex than words can describe or minds can understand.
He is all-powerful, all-knowing, and all-wonderful
I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s son. He humbled himself to be human.
He lived and died so that I, along with the rest of the world, could be free from sin. He conquered Satan by rising from the grave. He modeled a life everyone should live.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, who gives me the power to get through tough situations and directs me when I don’t know where to go.
He does so through my conscience, other people, and through the word of God in the Bible.
I believe in the church, which is a body of believers of Christ. Our job as members is to show God’s love to others and further His kingdom.
Without the church, I could not grow in my faith. They give new insights about God and help me when I am unsure in my walk.
I believe that as a disciple, I need to listen to God and follow where He leads.
I need to surrender all for His use, and turn down the noise in my life that distracts me from hearing what He has to say.
I believe God will help me through my struggles and use me for good; I just need to let Him. He will not use me against my will. I am not God’s puppet. I am His daughter, and I will be with Him in heaven one day.
