As we look at the scriptures this week, we’re going to see how God brings about revival. Over and over, there’s a rhythm in the life of Israel that occurs. God rescues Israel, they forget their covenant with him, and soon they’re suffering again. They repent, they renew their covenants, and blessing returns.
This is much like our own lives – without help, we quickly forget our covenant with our maker. Renewal happens as we return to him and cry out for help, acknowledging that He alone can restore us. Each week as we worship together, we remember our God, and we renew our commitment to him. We do this as we remember that He’s holy, that we’re sinful, and that we’re clinging to him alone. It’s a rhythm we repeat week after week, year after year, because it’s a truth we need every moment of every day. Let’s read these words from 2 Samuel together:
The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my savior;
My God is my rock, in whom I find protection.
He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety.
He is my refuge, my savior, the one who saves me from my enemies.
- 2 Samuel 22:1-3
