This confession of faith is adapted from some of the Scripture references that correspond to Q/A #9 from the Heidelberg Catechism.
Some congregations may find their responses a bit lengthy. In that case, perhaps include another voice part to split up the longer sections or have the congregation read the first voice part.
In the beginning,
God created the heavens and the earth.
(Genesis 1:1)
He is the Lord,
who has made all things,
who alone stretched out the heavens,
who spread out the earth by himself.
(Isaiah 44:24)
God waters the mountains
from his upper chambers;
the land is satisfied by the fruit of his work.
He makes grass grow for the cattle,
and plants for people to cultivate—
bringing forth food from the earth:
wine that gladdens human hearts,
oil to make their faces shine,
and bread that sustains their hearts.
(Psalm 104:13-15)
God predestined us for adoption
through Jesus Christ,
in accordance with his pleasure and will.
(Ephesians 1:5)
God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts,
the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.”
So we are no longer slaves,
but God’s children;
and since we are his children,
he has made us also heirs.
(Galatians 4:4-7)
Cast your cares on the Lord
and he will sustain you;
he will never let the righteous be shaken.
(Psalm 55:22)
Do not worry about your life,
what you will eat or drink;
or about your body, what you will wear.
Look at the birds of the air;
they do not sow or reap or store away in barns,
and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.
Are you not much more valuable than they?
(Matthew 6:25-26)
And we know that in all things
God works for the good of those who love him
who have been called according to his purpose.
(Romans 8:28)
What, then, shall we say in response to these things?
If God is for us, who can be against us?
Is anything too hard for the Lord?
(Romans 8:31)
Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?
Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or
nakedness or danger or sword?
(Romans 8:35)
I am convinced that neither death nor life,
neither angels nor demons,
neither the present nor the future,
nor any power, neither height nor depth,
nor anything else in all creation,
will be able to separate us
from the love of God
that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
(Romans 8:38-39)
